Late in life he married the American writer Joy Gresham (née Davidman), who died of bone cancer four years later at the age of 45. His conversion would have a profound effect on his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim. Due in part to Tolkien's influence, Lewis converted to Christianity, becoming "a very ordinary layman of the Church of England". Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, and both were leading figures in the Oxford literary group The Inklings along with Charles Williams. He has a fictionalised counterpart in the C.S. As well as being considered one of the greatest Christian thinkers of his time, Lewis wrote over 30 books, which were in turn translated into over 30 different languages. Lewis was born in Belfast, in pre-partition Ireland. As well as writing the Space Trilogy, he is known for his The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and nonfiction works such as Mere Christianity.
